Journalism Graduate Student, Debbie Eynon Finley, 2007
Project overview:
During a long weekend in November, 2007, Debbie’s graduate photojournalism class went to New Orleans, LA to photograph the music scene, post-Hurricane Katrina. They took pictures of musicians around the city – Musician’s Village, street performers, night clubs, high school battle of the bands, Second Line Parade, and many others. Below are five of the photographs taken by Debbie.

Children practice at Mardi-Gras Indian Cherice Harrison-Nelson’s home in Musician’s village in New Orleans, for an upcoming Mardi Gras Indian performance. Mardi Gras Indians dress up in Native American costumes and play music to celebrate their African and Native American roots.

Vocals/Bass Musician Michael Harris sits on the front porch of his new home in Musician’s Village. Harris moved in after his home was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. After Hurricane Katrina, Musician’s Village was built by Habitat for Humanity to provide reasonably priced houses for New Orleans artists and musicians. The community was planned by New Orleans natives musicians Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis.

On November 11, 2007 participants in the Second Line Parade in New Orleans, LA march to the beat of the live jazz music. A finalist photo for Photographer’s Forum magazine’s 28th Annual College Photography Contest. A Main Line is a club that has a permit to parade through the streets. The Second Line are the spectators and fans who join in.
