As part of its primary commitment to support student work, and especially to create and foster opportunities for students to develop professional experience and contacts within their fields, the University of Texas Documentary Center offered four scholarships in its second year of operations. The scholarships were funded by the general operating budget of the UT Documentary Center. We congratulate the awardees and we look forward to expanding these opportunities so that more of our deserving students may benefit in the future.

Three of the scholarships supported UT students in professional internships. For further descriptions, click on a name: Sergio Carvajal, RTF undergrad student, and Mattie Akers, RTF MFA student, interned with ITVS in San Francisco. Ruth Fertig, RTF MFA student, interned with Faction Films in London.

One scholarship was awarded to Pat Michels, a student in the Professional Master’s Program in Journalism, to help fund his photojournalism project “The Long Haul” (working title: “Private Battles”) which documents private contractors and their lives after they return from Iraq.
